Days 1 & 2: Core
The course has a two-day core and a further day where the coach normally completes an optional module, where their coaching is assessed. The course is designed to develop the understanding gained at Level 1 and progress the Level 1 coach toward independent coaching.

Role and responsibilities of a coach
Via Sprinting Activities
- The needs and the styles of coaches
- Analysis and development of the coaching skills required in the speed events leading toward the organisation of sessions and the progression of coaching and teaching skills

The use of skills drills, warming up and cooling down as athletic procedures together with the use of technical templates
Via Shot Putting
- The planning and delivery of relevant strength training sessions
- Identification of the different phases in athletic events
- Use of feedback, instruction and questioning
- Checking for the level of understanding between coach and athlete

Further fitness factors and the development of event specific activities such as circuits
Via Jumping Activities
- The development of biomechanical principles
- Observation and analysis
- Uses of demonstration and the development of complex actions

Further fitness factors and the ideas of event specificity
Via Endurance
- The development of flexibility
- Further analysis of the energy systems
- Planning long-term programmes

Concept of intensity and volume of work in sessions
The course closes with an overview of how to proceed toward the practical assessment in Day 3 and the specific requirements of the attendees to develop a coaching log. The coaching log at Day 3 will provide a summary of coaching practice and is retained by UK:Athletics
Day 3: Optional Module - Events
The day has three key elements
- A review of the events within a chosen discipline Throws, Jumps, Speed, Endurance, etc.
- A practical activity in the event group

An assessment of each attendees coaching of 'athletes' who are other attendees on the course
The 'Optional Module' Event Day 3 must be completed and coaches should chose one module only at this stage. Modules available include: Speed (including hurdles and relays), Jumps, Throws, Endurance, Children in Athletics or Fitness in Running and Walking. Further modules may be completed following qualification as a level 2 Coach. Both the 'Children in Athletics' and 'Fitness in Running and Walking' modules, being run as standalone modules, may also be completed by coaches with a level 1 license to qualify them for insurance purposes. Some of the other optional models such as 'Children in Athletics' have slightly different structures and these are explained in the last session of the core module on Day 2.
The course is 2 full days from 9.00 to 17.00hrs.
The current cost of this course is £140.00
Minimun number for the coures to go ahead is 20.
Minimum age of participants / coaches is 16.
